ESSENZ releases its first industrial batch of synthetic (S)-nicotine
A 149 kg batch, produced on 20 September 2026 at our manufacturing partner's GMP-certified site, measured 99.9% purity and an enantiomeric excess of 99.85%. Samples are available now.
Pully, Switzerland. ESSENZ Scientific SA has released batch NGD-20260920, its first industrial batch of synthetic (S)-nicotine. The 149 kg batch was produced on 20 September 2026 under contract at a GMP-certified partner site, and its certificate of analysis was issued on 23 September1.

The chemistry
The (S)-nicotine is built by chiral catalysis from defined industrial starting materials, without tobacco leaf and without a resolution step. The chemistry comes from the group of our Chief Scientist, Prof. Xumu Zhang, whose work on asymmetric hydrogenation for (S)-nicotine was published in Nature Communications2.
